It is interesting to me the prominence that Jerusalem has on the world stage in modern times. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam consider Jerusalem a vital part of their religious histories and traditions. Some in modern times are proposing that Jerusalem become a designated international city, belonging to the world and not merely to one nation, perhaps under a UN jurisdiction.
Jerusalem also holds a prominent place in the prophecies of Zechariah. Zechariah places Jerusalem at center stage in the unfolding drama of the second coming of Christ. The predictions in Zechariah are not actually being fulfilled in the world today, but await the actual return of Christ. But apparently, the stage is being set for the fulfillment of those prophecies with the rising prominence of Jerusalem as an international city and the Jews return to Jerusalem and the land of Israel.
I think the question is, to what extent should we take the prophecies of Zechariah as being a literal reference to the actual city of Jerusalem and the Jewish people as the DNA descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob…. This makes all the difference in how the prophecies are understood.
