TITLE: THE MEASURE OF ALL THINGS MESSIANIC
TEXT: Haggai 2:1-9
THEME: The messianic program of God for Israel and the world (nations) is centered in the temple in Jerusalem. The temple rebuild project, no matter how meager the structure, furthered the messianic purposes of God. This required the diligence and perseverance of Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the post-exilic Jerusalem returnees to complete the temple-rebuild project assigned to them by the LORD.
TRAIT: Faithfulness to God’s work on earth: The mature among God’s people should encourage and challenge those around them to make God’s work the highest priority.
Yet now be strong… declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts…. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not (Haggai 2:4-5).
TIP: We in the local church do temple building of sorts (1 Corinthians 3:10-17). [So,] Let each one take care how he builds (3:10).
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).
TEST: Can the seemingly insignificant church be truly majestic in the eyes of the LORD? Might the apparent meager influence of the small church be greater than we know in the broader scheme of things? Is the smaller church ministry worth the effort?
But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God (1 Corinthians 1:27-29).
